Henri Auguste Jules Patey, born in Paris in 1855, is one of the better known French engravers of the late 19th century. In 1896 he was appointed chief-engraver at the Paris mint, a post he held until 1930. Patey specialized in portrait medals. The attractive medals he created for King Rama V are some of his best works. The contacts the King made with Patey during his European tour must have resulted in series of silver coins, to be minted in Paris. It was in 1908 that Patey presented the patterns (essais) for a series of new coins, showing the King's uniformed bust, creating perhaps the most attractive amongst modern Thai coins. Patey also designed the new French 25 centimes in 1903 and some dies for the French colony of Guadeloupe.
